To The Film Commission
If you don't sell Steve Barr and a few board members down the river, then we'll end up in the unenviable situation of a prominent NZ filmmaker refusing to even meet the NZFC. I mean, think about it rationally. Steve's project would've required NZ on Air as well. You guys would've barely got a look in. Whereas I have at least two rock-solid feature ideas - Fantasia Italiana and Shipwrecked - that you want to fund, plus the shorts. We could even win an Oscar, given that there

To my enemies
You can't watch over my shoulder. You have to admit that you have. You must accept that you're not co-owners of my songs. Going to uni and picking up a big loan = no obligation to return. You must settle with me financially for the breach of privacy. If these conditions aren't met, no future scores will be written. Classical music is going to have to admit that they treated me like a prisoner, not like an equal. It's an expensive mistake, and they need to look to RNZ, who li

A diatribe about temp tracks
As someone that's both a director and a composer, I'm really sick of film scores. They're all boring and generic, including the hip, vaguely avant-garde indie scores. I blame the lack of imagination of my generation. In the old days, one made a six-stave score and demonstrated a film score on the keyboard or with a crude synth. Now, film demos are almost studio-quality, and often used in the final film. Not to mention people cloning the same six temp tracks for every mood.

Episode lengths
One of the great things about the streaming revolution was that there's no reason to standardise things like the lengths of episodes anymore, as opposed to broadcast media. Some teams leaned into that, but most people still keep the length consistent. AMPP, being by nature an active and reactive docuseries, didn't always suit that. The Dakumentary was a bit more consistent, but still had an overall variation of between one hour and three hours, plus one episode that was onl

Redirecting violence
One of AMPP's satirical policies is that all major international disputes should be settled by a football or rugby match. People need outlets for those thoughts. Sports is a really good one.

James and Cassandra, what the fuck is wrong with you? It's not enough that you're being paid to do something that you studied to do; it's not enough that you're sociable and well-liked within the Wellington bullshitter circles; you had to have my mana as well. I've said no every which way. It's ironic that all this happened while I was crushing on Chloe, and in fact y'all used that crush as an excuse to stalk me further. Pot calling the kettle black, though at least I naile

"money over wellbeing"
That's ultimately what my enemies chose. Money can buy happiness, but not if it's conditional on allowing people that stole my IP to boss me around. If I didn't have a case, I'd be filming that stupid series now.

End of the war
That's all. Wellington people may wish me to be Tina, but I said no. This was a legally defensible choice. I chose to pivot to writing a book. If the crook producers hadn't sold it, there wouldn't be a problem. I'm being punished for their unethical decision to rewrite me. - Focus on the positives, like my gig reviews, rather than exploiting me. If I look good in the clothes, that's the result of years of effort. There's no shortcut. All the closet cases need to assert

"Why won't you put the guitar in centre?"
Because then it's not about European imagination of Māori. If Rameka sits tacit in the centre for four out of the five movements, he's the exotic object. - The whole point is that 'the maori' isn't a real person. The guitarist and harpist could be of any ethnicity. - Says it all about how people are wired. The quartet is explicitly a critique of representation, and the response from mainstream classical was to strongly suggest (read "force me") to add token representati

whakapapa - brief version
When I looked up the Puhihuia song, the sheet music said that Ruby King had been told that story by Chief Tahuri Kaora of Ngāti Hikairo. Dr. Brown sent me an article in reply, stating that the story was usually attributed to Auckland tribes, such as Maungawhau and Awhitu, but that was George Grey's bowdlerised version of the story. This new attribution might be a more authentic telling of the mōteatea. Anyway, that was a pretty clear sign of whakapapa. - My Dad's family

String Quartet No. 1 (2025):
The Māori in European Art: Reclaiming the Iconomy of Sound by Amanda Michelina When Leonard Bell published The Māori in European Art in 1980, he was documenting more than just a collection of colonial paintings and engravings. He was tracing the European imagination of the Māori — a field of vision shaped as much by fantasy as by observation. In his introduction, Bell remarks on an engraving from around 1800, and a photograph from around 1900: “The engraver responsible for
