What does it mean to be progressive?

At the very basic level, it's the foolhardy belief that one might leave the world better off than one found it, or that one's children might inherit a better world than ours. Then there's all the technical hullabaloo about progressive taxing, which means that taxes get steadily higher as people's incomes increase. It's hardly rocket science.
