Anne Salmond's view of 'public intellectual' as a term. I like it precisely because it has that chin-stroking quality. As with all my stuff, there's a certain sense of taking the piss of that idea, but I still believe most of what I say. I've never thought that I could be PM or an MP, but it takes a certain amount of ego to opine on the issues!
