Perhaps you think of me as childish because you keep analogising me to movies like Soul or The Incredibles... that's not who I analogise myself to. I have the same hero worship thing that all guys have. For example, I used to think of my guitar playing as being similar to Williamson's batting, though Smith would be more apropos -- I named the first movement of The Ill-Made Knight "Top of the Averages" as a nod to T.H. White's Don Bradman reference, and obviously I compare my songs to my influences. I thought Soul was average, and didn't really nail jazz at all. Inside Out was treacly, but I saw that at the movies, so it was emotional (but I felt manipulated... that annoys me). - I'm not really attempting to connect to the audience via the showtunes; I'm showing off as a way of keeping my filibuster interesting. Mental Health Breaks, as Cameron Slater said. My knowledge of all that jazz and the Kiwi vernacular music has certainly helped the audience with understanding my music, though, so that's a win. But 'know' was Stephen's song. My song about that was The Mist. Plus I think showtunes are great protest songs, even though NZers have historically shied away from using them as protest tunes. Imagine if I could convince the real Greens to sing my climate chorus ditty... that would be some 2023 election gold!
