Another source says Paul challenged him to do it, and he'd been working on it as well. The biggest adjustment from the codified narrative is that the boys could read music a bit. John was partly Paul's mate because he could read and write songs to a songwriter level. George never mastered bass clef. John was never able to read serious piano music.

Put it this way: if you saw that video of myself at 14, I was similar to George. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3HO2WyyIOI My classical guitar was much more advanced, but I jammed by ear as well. That's what impressed George Martin and Sir Paul: my Take Five solo in 5/4. I started earlier. He didn't take guitar seriously until he was 11; I was 8.
