I was extremely clear on why I said no: I can't follow the conductor, the pieces require actual practice, and I don't think it's incumbent on me to premiere my own piece. As I said, that would create a lot of opportunities for me as a virtuoso, but it wouldn't create equal opportunities for people that actually want that career. Hence, I asked Chris Everest, who has actually been preparing to do a piece like Pan. All it takes from the classical music establishment is some faith that, unlike them, I know about guitar and guitarists, and that they can trust my word: If I say that Chris is up to it, then Chris is up to it.
