I tune against the sympathetic resonance of the instrument itself. That's how I play it in with fresh strings. Struck correctly, the low string can activate all the other overtones. From underneath, with the underside of the pulgar. Rolling it over the string, tanpura style. - Works with all the strings, then the colours dance. Māori musicians have an internal reference pitch (oro matua). - When the strings are settled, I use whatever tuning method is appropriate.
