Well, it's not the same as men in dresses or skirts. They can identify however they choose, with a decent expectation of that being met in the workplace. One of my complaints is that I got consistently misgendered at RNZ. Basically, I wasn't passing, so 'she' wasn't on the tip of people's tongues.

Neither was 'they' ... it was pretty consistently 'he' This shouldn't be so surprising. The Law Commission found that 1 in 4 people are misgendered in the public service, which RNZ is a part of: I'm still a PSA member! (p. 35) 'In one survey of rainbow public servants, around one-quarter of all respondents said none of their colleagues used their correct name and pronoun. In another survey, 17 per cent of transgender and non-binary respondents said their boss or co-worker had misgendered them on purpose.' https://www.lawcom.govt.nz/assets/Publications/IssuesPapers/NZLC-IP53.pdf

I've always insisted on the name. Changed it by deed poll, so it's a non-starter for people to refer to me as Michael, unless they knew me from before. One thing that pisses me off is that Amy is actually the diminutive of Amanda, yet people think it's an entirely separate name.
