Why I went DIY

Well, Gary is the most obvious reason; his entire philosophy is about DIY! But, for the musicians, it's that I always disliked the vibe of classical music. I've been whinging about accessibility and programming better pieces since I was 19. Plus, now that I'm out and trans, the bigotry of that world is so obvious. It's easy for musicians to say 'oh, that's just the audience, but we can tolerate you' ... that's hardly enticing. Lots of classical musos are conservatives and Christians, and that ain't good for trans people. - When I attended the recent book launch about the Front Lawn, I realised that the indie scene had totally embraced my vibe, to the point that Don and Harry were willing to sit for that book so I could understand them better. It was so much fun to watch Matthew sing the songs, but I think if I was to do a Kiwi hits gig, I'd probably include more jazz/blues tunes. I wonder if there's a Ken Avery songbook or something like that...
