Ok, I think I've figured out the full picture regarding the Baileys. Hope Bailey is my nearest relative that people are saying is Māori, so that would suggest that the Baileys who settled in Akaroa adopted several local children, and possibly did so again in Kawhia (hence William Bailey). It's all three generations back for me. Interesting, but it's the songs that make those connections feel alive. - My uncle mentioned that Hope and Ruby were friends. - Ngāti Mahuta is an intermarriage in my family line, rather than a blood connection.
