Well, I was taking a piss during the title sequence, but it seems alright. - Is it all anecdotal, or is there hard evidence? Yeah, the reading ratings are fairly 'hard', but that's still a limited study. I'd bet that the NZ educators use different metrics than the European equivalents. - I'm a freak: I could read real books by age 5. In fact, I didn't attend NZ school until Year 7. - They didn't say what socioeconomic rating Mahurangi College has... I feel like that's important info given the postcode lottery -- that's a ChCh opinion, lol. 🥝 -**** Ok, here's the evidence: lots of Year 10 students failing an NCEA reading test.👍 -**** Re: Karen O'Leary's segment The laugh track (presumably from the live broadcast) is super-awkward. It's fairly sparse -- usually people sweeten the laugh tracks with canned laughter. I mostly remember Oscar Kightley as the voice on the Countdown Newtown PA. 🤣 - It's definitely a step up from the Cannabis panel show from 2020. That was pretty lame. I muted the Ads. I really wish we had ad-free broadcasts... that's a media pirate POV. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After the first Ad break: Now it's off to the comedians doing the news: it's not great. Sort-of feels like a Last Week Tonight ripoff. The jokes are Dad jokes... wtf? 🤔 - I'm starting to wonder: what's the point of the Ministry of Education?

It seems like they're pretty useless at keeping track of what schools are up to. To use some anecdotal evidence: I used to teach guitar to a kid of someone fairly high up in the MoE, and they were doing some kind of alternative schooling rather than conventional school. 🤔 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Industry question: how far in advance are the advertisers locked in for a broadcast? Also, do the media personalities have to shill to the advertisers? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After the second Ad break: Yeah, Paddy. We need to kill cats in Aotearoa. 👍 - It's funny to see my local Countdown on the show, though it looks like the 'experiment' was another Countdown. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After the third Ad break: I missed some of the comedians on the news... not much of a loss. To mess around with words: I wonder if 'structured vs. balanced' is also applicable to journalism? 🤔 - So, it's a live broadcast, but it's full of tapes... that's totally legit, though I feel like that should be foregrounded. Some kind of title saying 'filmed [insert date here]' or something might improve the journalistic integrity. It seemed somewhat strange when Paddy said 'I'll catch up with the Education Minister shortly', given it's probably a tape. 👋 When I worked at Macca's, the playlist was set from the owners, and it often sucked. That's why 'Happy' cracked my pop songs playlist, though; of all the tunes that were played ad infinitum, that had a catchy hook. 🤣 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ After the fourth Ad break: Jan Tinetti is better on this than she is during Question Time. The National Party are totally out to get her, though. 'we need to bring the profession with us' ... I wonder about that. That sounds like someone caving to the Teacher's Unions. 🤔 Yeah, it'd be great if she backed up Paddy's statements. But I don't have much faith in the MoE. I think they're pretty lax. 🐸

A art show/museum piece about Palestine. Really interesting; packed in a lot for a room that was tiny. The most interesting part for me...
