I wonder how many CDs have never been released in another format and the master tapes have been stolen or lost? Lots of recorded music heritage that might evaporate. Also, I noticed while doing my Shipwrecked research at the National Library that Bush Singalong is available as an LP, but not as a digital file. - I wonder if that's common? Another thing that I listened to was a collection of transcribed Māori chants that had a recording as well. Those on are on obselete formats as well. Prevents piracy, but that's about it.

Not that anyone's asked me, but I think that when it comes to storage of old stuff, it's a three-pronged approach: storing them on the obselete formats that last centuries, doubling those up with a digital archive (more like Ngā Taonga), and something that evaporated before I typed it.
