My voice

As the Kiwi hits tape shows, it's clearly my own invention. Put together, those 10 tracks don't just sound like a copy of any of the original singers. It sounds like me. That's what I was developing, using Don's voice as the initial guide. See -- that's what my email to Barbie was all about. - I'm not doing a concert of them, though; as I say, the tapes are epic precisely because they're not recorded on the same day... while it's not great to have a mood disorder, it totally results in strong recordings. Prepping for the K road runthrough gave me some good ideas for September, but I'm not sure I want to do that -- I don't have anyone to film it yet, so that's bumming me out. - I'm fully aware of the irony that my character in the soap opera beat me to the punch re: the classic hits CD, but no, it doesn't mean I'm her. Life imitates art... I made several choices to make Tina different to me, much as I do with all the characters who I create. For example: Tina gigs, and I do not. And her repertoire isn't all the jazz and showtunes: that's the real me, while I wanted that character to sing folk tunes. - I call what I do 'party music', but I find rich white people parties fucking boring. I think it's a two-way street: those people wouldn't invite me to dinner by choice, but I'd probably hate going anyway, so it's not that big a deal... hanging out with Glen reminded me of that world. It was very poignant for me; reminded me of my past, but also why I left. I like to chinwaggle about serious music, but sporadically rather than 24/7 -- I'd say that journalism and documentaries give my life more purpose than playing guitar, but as a cultural guardian I'd like to pick up more Indigenous guitar styles.
