I saw the article about how venues are dying, which was also a theme in 2023. Personally, I started in classical music and then started performing at weed clubs, so it's not like alcohol underwrites my gigs or tours (that's probably why I don't make money!). It's impossible to build a cannabis venue at the moment, as it would require all the tokers to have medical certificates. That's what Chris Fowlie told me after the poor turnout at my 2025 gig: Golriz came, as did Sir Paul and his grandson Arthur. That was about it.
I'd also point out that the house party scene is where a lot of bands blossom, and that's always a vibrant part of NZ music.
