Did Tim Shadbolt discuss his childhood in Bullshit and Jellybeans? Not really.

So, why should I dissect my teen years in Just Like Yesterday? Because people want to evaluate my story and whether I truly 'am' a trans person. Gossips keen to throw more bombs at me ... plus Brian Tamaki. As one of the new wave of rainbow activists, I'm keen to point out that we're moving beyond the 'born that way' narrative, and expressing a view that sexual and gender orientation are a mix of nature and nurture. Mainstream New Zealand society hasn't moved on, however, which means that most people only count you as 'really' gay or trans/lesbian/bi/queer etc. if you felt that way from childhood. Yes, I have the stereotype story. So, given that we know that stereotype - youngest kid, raised more femininely, keen crossdresser, androgynous features - why should I focus on that? There's one homoerotic bit that I'll be putting in the Italian Fantasy ... well, there's several, but the moment I'm thinking of foreshadows my love life.
