It's a bit of a bromance number. That's the idea of it. In my head, John said 'I'm always in there,' but he's not always the most prominent. You can put a lot of overdubs on a dupe track. It often sounds like 8-10 vocal tracks. Think about the bridge ("I couldn't stand the pain"). My version is 3-part harmony, but theirs is two parts; despite this, George is audible. - That means that there is a wall of sound influence in the early Beatles records.

George Martin probably knew of Phil Spector.

I didn't use a wall of sound. It was just three voices rather than two. Microphones are better in the 2020's.
