I read that John set a string off so that his mother would know it was him. I also suspect they used another A than 440hz. Listening to an album in 430hz, and it sounds closer (I didn't tune up for my demos). Paul says that it was A = 434hz.

My brother believes that divine pitch shit, but I think that it's actually imperfect tunings that are more likely to move people emotionally. Speaking personally, I have an inner feeling about where E and A should be. It's like a light-to-dark spectrum. Certain guitar pieces favour subtle differences.

This came up in the recording session for Portrait of a Knight. I was criticising Leni for being out of tune at the very end of 'Tis You, and Ken's answer was that A is slightly sharper in parts of Germany and Austria (A = 442, 444hz).
