Māori - as a term for all Polynesians - don't believe that genetics alone are whakapapa. That's why I explained whangai in the 2-hour tape. Whakapapa is a much broader concept than ancestry. - While some have been suckered by genetic tests, they're hardly foolproof. What we can trace is mitochondrial DNA. What we can't trace is race. So I could find out if I'm Kate's or Ruth's grandchild, but not if I'm 'really' Polynesian.

Whakapapa is better for a constellation like The Beatles than ancestry. By the way, if I'm on the website, then I'm the official third Beatle atm.
