I had a good idea while I was taking a shit: it's not an action movie, it's a masala movie. Why is this important? Because it's not gratuitous violence for violence sake, plus there's musical numbers. That changes the tone of the film, and Deathgasm also demonstrates how this creates a comic tone rather than a nihilistic tone. - So, for instance, I want to blow up a ferry in Wellington Harbour as the turning point of the movie, but then the journo sings a song about how the terrorists are arseholes while grieving for his dead friend. If any of you have actually seen a masala movie, you'll know that the action and violence are counterbalanced by the musical numbers, and that allows me to have my cake and eat it too: so, there's cool action for the male audience and hand-wringing moralising about that action for the wuss audience.
