Honestly, we avoided them as much as possible. Portrait of a Knight was cheap because we refused to use cans or clicks. As a result, we got the 20 musicians for about half price. The Knight On My Couch had a more fluid pulse, as we found out when we added some extra percussion - it fluctuated between 130-140bpm. Lauren played to the track with cans, but minimal (if any) clicks. She was so tight that we barely had to edit it. 5/4 (3, 3, 2,2) goes to 4/4 (2,2,2,2) etc.... that's what makes the groove work. - Even with the Help and This Boy overdubs, it's all just overdubbing the demo. If I had clean sound, it'd be pretty seamless. Much like Tell Me, Dear, it's all a demo that I expanded. Huge fan of vocal harmonies, but my early songs were about proving it wasn't always the most important thing regarding a song. That's Sondheim's influence. I've got a good ear for it. Fairly good at singing the tricky bits.
