Part of what I hated about the feedback was this perception that the folk songs were interchangeable and that, since I'd attempted a few of my tunes at open mic nights, that it was 'natural' that I could do those songs (with more drag flava and lipsync)... fucking morons! That is incredibly stupid. I really thought the folk songs were the right choice, and that was the type of musician that I felt that Tim/Tina should be. Amanda is a fully trained composer with all that poofter fairy energy, but Tina was supposed to be more normal. I think that doing my songs in the style of Don't Let It Get You is a fucking awful idea, and I don't want to…

TL;DR you have no idea how much it annoys me when people say that musicals are 'light' or frothy. That's why I wrote that well-known essay about old shows. I have a musical that has a more ambitious goal. That's my Italian side: I genuinely believe that operas and musicals can unify a nation, and that's my goal with Shipwrecked 2030.
