Well, normally I'm all for AI, but it struck me that it's the perfect tool to create this gulf between the government and the proletariat. Like it or not, we're all using a lot more AI these days than a few years ago. As I said in the Dakumentary, bias is built into all these tools, even the ones that front with a more responsible front (like Deep Dream Generator). Why do you think that the AUKUS pillar that both Labour and National are keen to sign up to is the one that's about AI and technology? Because they want control.
It's not like we opted into AI, but more like it was sprung on us by Meta and Big Tech. But it goes beyond that: all the governments in the developed world use algorithms and machine learning to varying degrees. This is particularly 'problematic' in the justice system, as it's trained on preexisting data, which is almost certainly biased in the case of things like cannabis arrests. So, the luddite argument goes, the algorithm will send more people from Māori backgrounds to jail because the algorithm has determined that a lot of people with convictions are Māori. Judith is trumpeting the AI future, so it's worth pointing out that it'll likely be cold and impersonal. My nightmare is the one where we're all…
