Ok, so everyone likes to compare my musical to Rent or Hamilton or Hair, but they're completely forgetting that the first rock musical was Bye Bye Birdie, and that also features teenagers in revolt against 'the man'. Difference here is that Albert is the focus in Bye Bye Birdie, while Jo is the focus for Shipwrecked on Islands. Strouse is one of my favourite composers, and those Ginzler orchestrations on the original album are the best of any show ever imo. Whether We're Rich or Poor is like Rosie, though obviously it's a folk song rather than one of my own compositions. I think the interpolations in the Shipwrecked score were quite effective, and felt cohesive. - Joe Dante hates that Jason Alexander version, but I think it's a fair, solid version of the show. I can't stand the 1960's movie, though... I hate most of the 1960's movie musicals.

Stray thought: what if we copied the Second Civil War and had Edgar and Rose as a thing? I figure Jo starts singing Whether We're Rich or Poor, then Nate, Pandora etc. join in for the final A of the first chorus. Then there's some dialogue... then everyone picks up the tune until 'so if you'll bank on me' -- that's when Edgar sings the solo to Rose. 🥝
