There's quite a long past, stretching back to the late 19th Century, but few recordings. Waituhi was recorded, but I'm pushing for a full revival. Since I've been old enough to attend concerts, NZ vocal music has been somewhat obsessed with things like cantatas and oratorios that aren't officially opera. It's much easier to get a couple of singers and a full orchestra than loads of costumes. NZ Opera should be stepping in and commissioning a new piece every year. - I realise most people aren't able to write a full opera when they're young, and that's my main claim to fame, but it depends on how much support they're given. While the university wasn't much help, I had a good half-dozen experienced mentors that were opining about and working on Wellington Stories, as did my brother.
