It irks me when people think that I'm exactly like my music. Temperamentally, I'm more like an engineer or someone that does very precise work. The music sounds very free, but it's very controlled. John Psathas used to say that Hollywood scores were like that: a really precise science of how to manipulate emotions. -

I remember mentioning Rodgers at school to my composition teachers.

So yeah, I had a whole other life and that's why I'm snippy about the uni taking credit for what was largely a solo mission that I taught myself.

I'd read the Jerome Robbins letters when I decided to share about the drug use of all those musicals people. Part of why the general Kiwi audience connects with my use of those songs is that they still connect those to traditions that currently exist, ie showbands and campfire song. The other part is that I humanise the composers and explain them as businesspeople.

As for this whole 'make a documentary on Don' - well, it is a good idea. 👋🏻

Surprisingly, spite isn't really a motivator for me with this whole select committee idea.

I mean, you'd think so but for me it's more about figuring out what to say, and that doodle re: gender protection was an early idea.
