Yeah, that's not how it was always spelled, but macrons are imperfect for te reo. Count two beats - poets call those feet - on the a, and see if that sounds natural or 'right'? The answer is that's too long. This is exactly what I mean when I say that the reo isn't metrically even, unlike European. The way I say it is like a vowel blend with slightly longer 'a' ... - Hori put macrons in weird places, which made me realise there were regional variants.
