Apparently some people find that cringe. That's stupid: if songs are to remain current, then they need to tap into the vernacular. We spend hours a day on a screen. What's freaking people out is that I'm making a timeless sound, but I'm also collapsing their online and offline lives in my lyrics. - Machine Fatigue was the first of my songs to have that effect. The first line almost always got a shocked laugh. 'You glance at your inbox...' - those things are usually left out of pop lyrics. - It's like with Call Me, Maybe. That had a contemporary hook. - As for why do I repeat 'No Disguises?' - repetition makes it more meaningful. - Though I'm a budding curator, I don't tend to fetishise the past. That's what Portrait of a Knight is about.
