Feeling tokenised

Writer: Amanda RiddellAmanda Riddell

Read this timeline and see if you agree with these statements: 2011-2015 - Amanda attended music school. Everyone thought her obsession with musicals was a waste of her time and talent. 2016-2018 - Amanda made her first feature. VUW made no financial contribution. 2019-2020 - Amanda came out as trans, and was called a fake, a liar and a pervert. 2021-2023 - Amanda wrote some really good stuff and got some good views. But, instead of seeing her as an adult fully capable of telling a complex satire about climate change set in the year 2030, they chose to tokenise her as a trannie. They didn't want Amanda's trans politics. They didn't want Amanda's beliefs about sex and religion, they just wanted her to glam up and be their queen (despite hating her). They only wanted to mimic Pose, and they only wanted to do that because Covid forced a number of prominent people to endure mild poverty, and VUW is honestly bankrupt. VUW can think about the tens of thousands of dollars that they gave to Jake to further his career now that I'm refusing to assist them. Only 13% of creatives make over $75,000 p.a. from creative income. Much of which is probably from contestable funding or other forms of state support. Funnily enough, two-thirds of all artists earn under $50,000. That's the 13% that is butthurt that I refused to be their token. Forgive me if I consider those to be crocodile tears from people that never liked me (and hate my opinions). https://creativenz.govt.nz/Development-and-resources/Research-and-reports/A-Profile-of-Creative-Professionals-2023
