I know that a lot of journalists and filmmakers think that they're not really up to snuff for serious work, but I think that's a crock of shit. The major downside is that they suck at recording continuously, but my brother got a 4K handycam-type thing that works well for filming gigs and such, and if you're using multiple cameras then it's usually easy to hide the gaps with DSLRs. With prime lenses, or even with a decent zoom, the image quality is good. My Canon 550D survived nearly a decade and filmed The Asterisk and Te Whakaahua. That was a 50mm prime with a 18-135mm lens that came with the camera. - I wouldn't recommend phone cameras, but they're definitely part of the toolkit for serious people as well, though all that punk VFX in my Dak films wasn't very newsy.
