Amanda vs. London

Look, casting Ariana as Dot says more about the predilections of certain producers than it does about the validity of filling the role. Amanda as Dot is a whole other type of play. Steve loved that type of thing. He loved gender inversions, unlike most Americans. It's odd that the Brits are shitting on my idea of playing a female role. - The lyrics in Colour and Light make no sense with someone that thin and flat. 'If my breasts were smaller/if my hips were flatter/if my voice was warm...' She's supposed to be a woman with some curves and a rough voice, not a Disney type. Bernadette is Italian-American, and the parlando she did is what makes it memorable. They'd rather see someone who looks like a boy: that's what Zohra's story is about. Michelle was the perfect person for those types -- breasts, but is built like a bloke. Our production is intended for Christchurch and Melbourne. That's hardly competition.

Look, you're not going to beat me on the question of what Sondheim thought: it's my area. My whole thesis is that some of both Sondheim and Lapine's ideas aren't so great.
