Mescaline, LSD and shamanism LSD is a chemical approximation of the descriptions given by practitioners of shamanistic drug practices - it reproduces the effect, but not the idea. All that happens when you take cactus juice is that you throw up, but in throwing up you realise that's all that happens: all we have is reality in this moment, and that alters your state of consciousness. It's all just a trick, and shamanism is about showing that it's a trick.
