It seems so long ago, now. It may seem weird, but I essentially got excommunicated after advocating for legalising weed and speaking out about the misogynistic culture of classical music. Most of my mentors as a performer were/are women. Plus they all wrote me off when I came out with my radical fairy style, which made it easier to believe Jake's account of the evening. - The opera is me dipping my toes back in, and seeing if things have changed.

It's funny that all they want is the Shipwrecked songs, not some new opera with scandalous scenes and a few tune fragments, even though one of those tunes is doing very well on YouTube. People like what they've heard before, and my ad campaign resulted in familiarity. They don't want Shipwrecked, though. They want those songs and Tina's story: I refuse to do that on principle. They have to accept that I'm trans, but I'm also fully capable of scoring an opera: in fact, I did that successfully long before my voice got good. Funny because they gave me zero support in my dream of writing Dunedin rock, and now they think it'll make them look hip. They keep on telling me…
