Riffing on Dan Slevin's piece about 35mm film: Dan was one of our key mentors when it came to movies for Riddell Productions, as he hosted all the 48Hours sessions at the Paramount where the good teams explained how they did their thing. We attended regularly and asked annoying questions. 👍 - I'm yet to begin upscaling the footage, but the soft focus on the phone footage was mostly due to my iPhone crapping out in 2022. The titles changed slightly from episode to episode because I was running the Ads weekly, and was trying to get the right look. Whether all the footage should be graded to match -- well, those news clips are just taped off the TV, so I have no idea what the real files look like, but I think the different styles are what make the film compelling. The sound design is the main missing aspect, though the thin sound that most of the films have is compelling too -- I remember a sound designer saying once that he thought leaving sounds out from the soundscape drew him into films more than full-fledged 5.1 with hundreds of tracks mixed together. I'm not sure if the scar on my forehead is an acne scar. Probably... - I wasn't shocked to discover that theatres dumped the prints, but I'd always assumed that given the movie studios owned them, they'd be shipped back to the States or something. Those 4k Criterion restorations are like looking at another movie -- my personal opinion is that they're fantastic, but they're radically transformed by modern grading and Pro Tools. Is it really the same film if the mono sound is now 5.1 and the colours have been altered by 21st century tech that allows for motion tracking (whitening teeth etc.)?
