If my Reo teacher is right, then it would be technically accurate to say that there's whakapapa within my tupuna, but that there's no specific tipuna that's from my particular ancestral line. See - this is why it pays to take a course with a kaupapa Māori institution.

He said that's how it was explained in a Rose Pere book. Tupuna = many ancestral houses, while tipuna = an ancestral home.

While saying this, it would be remiss of me to point out that the 'we like you now that you're Māori' thing is really silly.

That's tokenism; that's precisely how I feel about the whole 'now that you're trans and we've finally discovered that you're not a perv by interrogating you like a criminal, we feel bad and want you to be our mascot' attitude. I'm the same person: you're the ones who never bothered to ask me about my life. I'm not coming to Pride. Gary and Dakta are.
