He said that's how it was explained in a Rose Pere book. Tupuna = many ancestral houses, while tipuna = an ancestral home.

While saying this, it would be remiss of me to point out that the 'we like you now that you're Māori' thing is really silly.

That's tokenism; that's precisely how I feel about the whole 'now that you're trans and we've finally discovered that you're not a perv by interrogating you like a criminal, we feel bad and want you to be our mascot' attitude.
